If Versailles Were a Micro-Apartment

Nothing says micro-apartments need be modern in their aesthetic. Cathy Lerebours’ 375 sq ft NYC apartment affirms this point. Rather than being a temple to all things white and symmetrical, the tiny space has been furnished in a fashion more Louis XIV than Louis Kahn (to be very fair, the style of the apartment is more Parisian flat than imperial palace).

Considering Lerebours is an antiques dealer, the decoration of the Hell’s Kitchen apartment shows a great deal of restraint–a few carefully selected, mostly-European-sourced pieces of furniture give the space an intentionally filled look. Like many successful small apartment layouts, the apartment enjoys very high ceilings, which permits a loft bed area that resembles a true bedroom.

Though we can’t say this for sure, Lerebours’ creative décor is, in part, a function of circumstances. She has lived in the space since 1994, first as a renter, then in 2000, as an owner. We imagine the price she bought was much lower than it would have been had it she bought today. Rather than moving and adding size, Lerebours stayed put and added creativity and style to make it the home she would want to stay in.
