This month is Dwell Magazine’s small space issue, and in it they feature the home of actor Vincent Kartheiser, aka Pete Campbell from Mad Men. In a departure from the Hollywood big-ass-house norm, Kartheiser’s pad is a very sane 580 sq ft. Beside it just being refreshing to see a celebrity living in such modest confines, the home is packed with cool features.
The project was completed by design/builder Funn Roberts in what he dubs Japanese-industrial style. The home’s most distinctive feature is a bed that is suspended on the ceiling by metal wires. The lowering of the bed is assisted by a 300 lb steel counterweight hidden in a closet. Behind the bed is a headboard that flips up to serve as a desk or counter when the bed is raised.
There is also a narrow wet bath with a Japanese soaking tub. The bathroom is concealed by a shoji-style wall that, when opened, makes the bathroom look like an integral part of the space (in this case, that’s not a bad thing). See and read more about Kartheiser’s place at Dwell.
