For the past nine years, fellow small space aficionado site Apartment Therapy has been holding a competition called “Small Cool.” As the name implies, they are on a hunt to find the world’s smallest and coolest apartments. The competition is divided between several size classes:
- Teeny-tiny: 400 Square Feet and under
- Tiny: 600 Square Feet and under (but over 400 Square Feet)
- Little: 800 Square Feet and under (but over 600 Square Feet)
- Small: Under 1,000 Square Feet (but over 800 Square Feet)
- International: All non-US entries (under 1,000 Square Feet)
Each entry includes pictures of the small space and a Q and A with the entrants, who talk about the plusses and minuses of small space living (storage seems to be a near universal issue).
What’s most compelling about the competition is seeing how people are making the most of their small spaces using existing, readily available resources. Entrants are mostly renters who are trying to make their small spaces livable and beautiful on modest budgets.
If you are interested in submitting your apartment, we’re afraid to say AT is no longer accepting entries. From now to til May 31, visitors can vote for entries. Between June 4 and 5, visitors can vote for the finalist. The grand prize winner will receive $3K and the four division finalists will receive $750 each.
